Bill Hicks

Bill Hicks died of liver cancer at the age of 32. He was one of the greatest comedians ever to live. He is often compared to George Carlin because of his ability to use comedy to spread an important message.

Bill Hicks hated politics, religion, marketing, consumerism, and dumb people. He lived in a time where misinformation was at its peak and he was quick to make fun of the people that were spreading lies. Through his comedy, he exposed the liars and spread truth about war, drugs, and America’s unending desire to consume.

His work was largely inspired by psychedelic experiences he had earlier in life. He was a promoter of peace, exploration of consciousness, and the idea that life shouldn’t be taken so seriously.

I am not sure what Bill Hicks would think of today’s society, but I know he would have some funny and important things to say about it.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony is one of the most creative and talented rap groups of all time. The diverse styles of the various members gives each song a dynamic feel. Equally dynamic are the themes used in their songs. Bone Thugs can go from hardcore gangster rap to a song about peace and love.

I added them to the list because they spread a positive message through a genre that is stereotypically negative.

Daniele Bolelli

Daniele Bolelli is an author and professor from Italy. He wrote “On the Warrior’s Path”, a philosophical exploration of martial arts that was very popular outside of the martial arts community. His knowledge of religion and religious history is truly impressive. He wrote a somewhat anti-religious book “50 Things You’re Not Supposed To Know About Religion”, however, he still seems to respect the power of the true religious/spiritual experience.

His next book is supposed to be called “Create Your Own Religion” and it will be about asking yourself what you believe to be true instead of accepting the doctrines from thousands of years ago.

Bolelli is also a strong believer in individual freedom and he isn’t afraid to talk about it. Whether the issue is abortion, drugs, or the right to end one’s life; he speaks about the absurdity of a government that legislates morality based on personal beliefs.

Dave Matthews

Dave Matthews is a rare musician. He writes his own songs, has amazing talent, and appeals to the masses. More importantly, he shares himself on stage by putting tons of emotion into his performance.

He has a large volume of recordings, so you have a lot to listen to. I think his live performances are his best stuff, but his studio albums are great too.

David Hayward (the nakedpastor)

David Hayward (the nakedpastor) is a pastor and an author of books, artwork, and nakedpastor.com – a blog of mostly cartoons.

David Hayward is a sign of hope for the Christian religion. He focuses on the core spiritual values that all religions are based upon and ignores the church doctrines that separate and exclude others.

His cartoons are always funny and have a great message. His drawings of the female character “Sophia” are stunning. Check him out, he gets it!

Duncan Trussell

Duncan Trussell is a comedian, writer, and podcaster. He has been on various comedy TV shows, but you have most likely seen him on the LA comedy scene or heard him on his podcast – The Duncan Trussell Family Hour.

Duncan Trussell’s comedy and podcast focuses on religion/spirituality, mythology, self improvement, politics, society, art, music, and anything related to expanding consciousness.

Duncan is an intelligent and funny node of the multiverse that respects both the scientific and spiritual worldviews.

I highly suggest listening to his podcast because it is the perfect combination of entertainment and enlightenment. It will also encourage you to take care of all the important stuff you have been avoiding or ignoring.

Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle is an interesting character. He has a strange yet completely authentic way of speaking. His writing style is very conducive to spiritual ideas that are very difficult, or even impossible to completely grasp.

A common theme of Tolle’s work is the psychological relationship between the Ego and the Self. He repeatedly promotes the idea that we are the awareness of our life experience and not the life experience itself.

Tolle is an important teacher for our time. He speaks to the individual about reconnecting to their true self and their role in the mass shift of consciousness, or the “New Earth”. We need more people like Tolle encouraging individuals to make a positive shift in their own lives that can lead to a positive shift in humanity as a whole.

Gary Johnson

Gary Johnson is different kind of politician because he wants to dissolve the differences between conservatives and liberals by offering solutions that would benefit all Americans.

In 2012, he is running for president on the platform of fiscal conservatism, individual freedom, anti-war, and other libertarian values.

One of the big issues Gary Johnson supports (and the big reason why I respect him) is the legalization of marijuana. Johnson points out that about 50% of Americans think marijuana should be legalized, but 0% of our elected officials support legalization.

This divide is scary and shows a clear lack of effectiveness of our government. Gary Johnson is working to eliminate this gap between the People and the Government and is therefore an important part of the #FourthBranch.

Immortal Technique

Immortal Technique is an American rapper from New York. He is a talented and authentic artist spreading important messages that need to be heard.

Immortal Technique is a major player in returning an element of activism to hip hop. His music contains messages about keeping the internet free, global politics, oppression, and freedom.

At first listen, the importance of his message can overshadow his talent and ability as an artist. Even an amateur rap listener like myself can tell his delivery and wordplay are on another level.

Immortal Technique suggests many ideas to the listener, none more important than his call for people to start thinking for themselves.

Jason Silva

Jason Silva might be the most enthusiastic person in the world when it comes to technology and how it is changing our world. He talks about how technology is able to alter our conscious experience, bring people together, and solve the world’s biggest problems.

He is excited about technology that helps us live longer, transform scarcity into abundance, and harness the power of the collective human cognitive resource. He expresses his excitement in easily consumable and high production-value videos.

Really smart people + the enthusiasm of Jason Silva = Creative Solutions

There is no way I can express the excitement and enthusiasm that Jason Silva brings to the table. You can see what I am talking about by watching his videos on Vimeo.

Jay-Z

Jay-Z is a different kind of genius. He does amazing things with words and music that very few can fully comprehend. I highly suggest you read his book “Decoded” (linked below). In the book he gives the reality of growing up in a hostile environment where selling drugs is an attractive business venture, while simultaneously breaking down some of his most famous lyrics throughout the book.

If there is one defining feature of Jay-Z it is his ability to be completely comfortable with contradiction, an invaluable attribute.

Joseph Campbell

Joseph Campbell is an American mythologist, writer, and lecturer. He spent his life learning about cultures all over the world. Campbell was able to highlight universal truths by comparing the worlds cultural mythologies.

Campbell understood the true nature of spirituality and mythology. He treated them as psychological and social tools that point to a transcendent reality. He was clear that mythology are not made up stories, but rather the best explanation of the universe and life according to the science of the time.

He also talked about God as both a mental creation and a real experience – an idea that so many people sadly spend their entire lives fighting against.

Things are changing so fast and when you’re going through a long tunnel, anxiety comes along. And all you have to do to transform your hell into a paradise is to turn your fall into a voluntary act. And it’s a very interesting shift of perspective. And that’s all it is – joyful participation in the sorrows and everything changes.

And thats what I’m interested in bringing forward here. I may not be changing the world, but I’m changing people. And that’s is whats necessary, that is what’s got to be done.

Joseph Campbell’s Series titled “Mythos” is on Netflix. It will change the way you look at yourself, society, culture, and religion.

Lothar Schafer

Lothar Schafer is a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Arkansas. Schafer is not the most “connected” person online, but he has uploaded a series of videos to YouTube that are simply amazing.

In these videos, Schafer describes his exploration of consciousness and how it plays a major role in evolution and biology. Schafer attempts to fill the holes left by Darwinian evolution, holes he believes can be filled by quantum physics and cosmic consciousness.

Neil deGrasse Tyson

Neil deGrasse Tyson is an astrophysicist and spokesperson for science. His intelligence and communication skills make him a great assest to the scientific community.

Tyson is a big promoter of the NASA space program, a program that he believes is a source of inspiration for our world. He says the NASA program inspires young people to become scientists and engineers with the intention of making the future a reality.

No Labels (NoLabels.org)

No Labels was formed in late 2010 as a bipartisan movement to improve problem solving in government. They want “government to stop fighting and start fixing”.

No Labels supports people and ideas that want to fix America’s broken government by encouraging bipartisan collaboration. Their “Make Congress Work!” campaign is a 12-point plan to create more unity in Congress (see it here). The first point of the plan, “No Budget, No Pay”, is a piece of legislation that would force Congress to pass spending budgets on time or not get paid on time.

No Labels is an inspiring organization for me. I write/tweet/talk about how polarization is killing democracy in America (like this article), so it is good to know that there is a really smart and experienced group of people that feel the same way…and are doing something about it.

Phil Lewis

Phil Lewis is a digital artist “creating craziness” (as he puts it in his Twitter bio). He creates stunning works of art with a psychedelic flare.

Phil’s art is really cool because he offers it in various mediums. In his online store, you can find his artwork as prints, coloring books, custom phone cases, frisbees, puzzles, umbrellas, posters, tapestries, and various other practical mediums.

The puzzles are especially awesome. They are made out of cedar and have a unique puzzle piece pattern. Some of the puzzle pieces are even designed to look like animals, plants, and geometric shapes. The puzzles are expensive, but they are so much nicer than your average cardboard jigsaw puzzle.

Phil has proven to me that he “gets it” through his artwork. Common themes in his art are depictions of animals and landscapes in a psychedelic setting. He obviously understands the importance of the psychedelic experience and is spreading this message with his art.

Rudy Tanzi, Ph. D.

Rudy Tanzi is a neuroscientist and one of the leading researchers of Alzheimer’s disease. His lab has been directly involved in the discovery of 3 crucial genes that are directly associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

What makes Dr. Tanzi stand out is his wholeness approach to his research and life. He understands that a cure for Alzheimer’s disease is not here yet and therefore is a strong promoter of preventative medicine when it comes to the disease. Helping people with Alzheimer’s disease is more important to him than finding a cure or making a name for himself.

Aside from his research, Dr. Tanzi is a big promoter of spirituality, consciousness, and the idea that you are not your brain. He consistently tweets about these topics and works with Deepak Chopra from time to time to spread ideas.

Also look for his book, “Superbrain”, that he is co-authoring with Deepak Chopra.

Stuart Hameroff, MD

Stuart Hameroff is a physician and researcher at the University of Arizona Medical Center.

Dr. Hameroff believes that the computations necessary for consciousness take place within the microtubules of neurons. This is an important distinction because it is possible for quantum processes to occur at the scale of microtubules. If Hameroff is correct, it could be the evidence needed to create a link between quantum physics and consciousness.

Stuart Hameroff is inspiring because he is working on the most difficult problem in science – the problem of consciousness. No one really knows how consciousness works, where it comes from, and how much of a role it plays in the creation of our reality. I will be looking to Dr. Hameroff to answer these questions with his research.

Tracy McCullough

Tracy McCullough is the author of TheLoveVitamin.com, one of the best blogs about acne on the web. Tracy focuses on holistic healing methods, but discusses all possible treatments.

There are two reasons I added Tracy to this list:

1. Authenticity/Transparency – Tracy is so open and honest with everything she puts out on her blog. Check out her about page where she tells all, including a picture of her when her acne was at its worst. The transparency continues with her video blog posts, which you can tell are done on the first take each time.
2. Wholeness – Unlike the approach of traditional western medicine, Tracy approaches acne with a wholeness perspective. She understands that most (if not all) acne conditions are rooted in emotional issues. Tracy asks her readers to transcend the vicious cycle of acne by finding unconditional happiness and peace in life.

Tracy is one of the few bloggers I connected with when I started this blog that is still blogging. As I watched her grow and expand the blog, I knew she would be successful because of her overwhelming authenticity, transparency, and passion.

When I first started reading Tracy’s blog, my acne was a little out of control. Tracy gave me the support and information to get to the root of my problem, which was an obsession and anxiety related to my physical appearance. My acne is not 100% gone, but it is much better than before and I owe it all to Tracy.

Tupac Shakur

Tupac Shakur was one of the greatest rappers of all time…and so much more.

He made the phrase “THUG LIFE!” popular, but not to promote the sterotypical “thug life”. He wanted black people to embrace the labels that society was placing on them so they could then transcend those labels. He empowered a generation in America that was used to be disempowered, which made a lot of people uncomfortable.

After his mysterious death in 1996, he became an instant mythology. There are people to this very day that believe he is alive, which speaks to the impact he had on his fans.

The truth is that Tupac was just too big for his time. His untimely death was unfortunate, but I also feel that it was inevitable.

Tupac’s voice was so uncompromising and authentic that the course of history was altered by it. We can only imagine how different our world would be today if he was still alive.

Zac Brown Band

Zac Brown Band is a country music band that is on a different level. Their unique sound, amazing musical talent, and impressive lyrics set them apart from what you typically hear on your country music station.

Songs like “Let It Go”, “Quiet Your Mind”, and “Free” show that they get it.
